The first rolling-element bearing was invented in Nuremberg, Germany by Peter Henlein (1504–1558). Rolling-element bearings are the most common type of bearings used today. Other types include a plain bearing, an elastic bearing that uses a spring to support objects under load; and fluid bearings which use fluids such as oil or water instead of grease. the bearing is such an important item in so many everyday things.
Many engineers don’t know it but they would be lost without rolling element bearings. Almost everything around you has at least one small part that includes this technology. For example, modern cars have over 12 different bearings on each wheel alone. They are usually hidden away out of sight so they don’t get shown off like other features. But they do so much to keep the car working smoothly and safely.
For example, when a car is starting up before it can move forward, one of the wheels must turn backwards slightly as the brakes release. The axle housing which holds everything in place has a sealed bearing at each end that allows for this type of movement without causing friction or rubbing. It lets you be on your way quickly after you step out of the car door instead of just standing there while it turns over and over again until it starts to roll.
The outer casing of your TV remote control has two bearings hidden inside; one at either end. They allow for smooth turning while you cycle through the channels on your set.
The most common bearing is the rolling-element bearing, a large rolling-element bearing is a mechanical part that supports heavy loads. Its moving parts consist of the shaft, outer ring and rollers and cages made of hard or soft materials. It can be used in cars, trains, planes, machines and many more applications where load carrying is required.
A rolling-element bearing works by keeping friction to a minimum between the rollers and outer rings. This reduces wear on both components as well as lessens energy loss due to grinding between parts during rotation. A bearing’s performance depends on many factors including geometry (designed for high life), applied loads (programmed for maximum duty cycle) and environment (operates without excessive temperature changes). Alternatively, there is the elastic bearing which is also used in many things or plain bearing.
Bearings are so common, but what makes them so popular?
From ancient times to buying bearings online, the history behind them is very interesting. To many, bearings seem to be an unimportant part of most mechanical systems. In fact, some may argue that they are overrated or even unnecessary. However, this is not true for ball and roller bearing.

Structure design – The space inside a ball bearing can be used as a place to hide slack wires or other components of the structure. This allows greater freedom and versatility when designing structures as compared with non-bearing components such as pulleys and wheels. It’s amazing how much a bearing is used. Some designs also make use of enclosed bearings, where two or more bearings are connected, usually to increase efficiency or reduce friction. The term “enclosed” refers to the race being completely surrounded by a housing; enclosed bearings have been used since ancient times.
