Civil engineering is hard to explain because there are so many different sectors, however, if we are to put it simply, then civil engineering is everything you see that has been built around us. It’s about building roads and railways, schools, offices, hospitals, water and power supply. To make it in this industry, you need to know what aspects of civil engineering interest you, and from there you can begin taking the right steps to become a civil engineer.
For the most part, as a civil engineer you will need to help find ways to deliver the infrastructure needed in society when there’s little money in the pot to pay for it. So you could say that the role of a civil engineer is to come up with answers to difficult problems and then help implement them, so civil engineers do quite literally shape the world we live in. This can of course be a very fulfilling job, but it’s a huge industry and if it interests you, then it’s important to start thinking about the area you would like to specialise in.
